Gymnasium Renovation Concept
Kansas City, KS
As part of an on-call excercise, Pluribus was asked to generate a concept for the Kansas State School for the Blind gymnasium, which was long overdue for a renovation. Needs that were identified included storage areas, way finding, a goalball court, stage that meets ADA, new retractable seating, and guide ropes for running.
Pluribus responded with a carefully executed plan to accommodate the largest range of users at the Kansas State School for the Blind. Understanding the range of human factors, high contrasting colors, saturated colors, and cortical visual impirment (CVI), the color schemes were designed for different color abilities, as well as texture and feel for transitions, providing a safer and flexible space that could adjust for each users needs. The existing stage was too high to be functional for anything and was unsafe due to it’s elevation. Lower the stage and making it ADA accessible was a major step in making the stage functional for a much larger range of activities.
The court included a number of flexible options, allowing the court to be used for weekend basketball games as well as physical therapy and exercise for the students throughout the week. A new surface allows for goalball to be played and stripped with raised courtlines. A perimeter guide rope with removable posts in the floor, also allowed flexibility to transform quickly when needed. Storage areas were created along one side of the court to provide easy access to instructional materials, as well as interactive displays.
