Conservatory Greenhouse Demolition & Site Restoration

Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS

Originally constructed in 1907, KSU Greenhouse D Conservatory was relocated to the KSU Gardens location in 1977. The Greenhousewas no longer used due to public safety concerns and poor condition of the infrastructure. The glass shell of the greenhouse wasmissing numerous panels and the utility systems cannot maintain indoor environmental conditions suitable for growing plants. It waslocated on a prominent KSU gardens site planned to host a new conservatory in the future.

The project scope included the full demolition of the existing structure, foundations, existing site improvements, and abandonment ofutilities to be capped 5’ beyond the existing building footprint for future use. The existing garden lighting electrical service and sprinklercontrols were relocated to new weatherproof enclosures to maintain the garden operations. Site restoration included grading, newtopsoil placement, and sub-grade preparation in anticipation of a future structure. New garden arbors were designed to reflect theshape of the original conservatory and respectful of existing gardens structures throughout the site
